Faith Partners is a Colorado nonprofit humanitarian services organization committed to helping families in need break the cycle of poverty in their lives by providing education and volunteer mentors who give support and advocacy.
The Need
The welfare reform act of 1996 stipulates that families on public assistance will have benefits terminated within two years and are now limited to a five year lifetime cap on assistance. Able-bodied persons are now required to participate in job training or self-employment in order to receive any assistance. Some welfare recipients are experiencing temporary circumstances which have contributed to their financial and emotional setbacks. For many, however, poverty sets in because people were simply not taught basic skills that would enable them to become - and stay - self-sufficient. They were not taught how to see beyond their poverty.
